Sildenafil Drug Interactions

I’m sure you’ve heard of Sildenafil, also known as Viagra. It is the most common drug used for treating Erectile Dysfunction (ED). Although it is safe to use, it does cause several side effects. It also interacts with a wide range of drugs.

If you are thinking of trying Sildenafil, read the contraindications first. You also need to tell your doctor about any other medication you are currently taking. You increase your risk of severe side effects when you mix Sildenafil and other drugs. And, in some instances, those side effects can be life-threatening.

Sildenafil and ED Medications

You should never consider taking Sildenafil with any other medications for ED. the bigger the ED dose doesn’t mean the better your performance will be! This advice applies to both prescription and natural or over-the-counter ED medication. If you take Sildenafil and other ED drugs, you risk intensifying the side effects of both.

Furthermore, excessive ED medication can cause Priapism. Priapism (a long-lasting and painful erection) is a severe side effect. If you experience Priapism, you must seek medical attention immediately. Without medical attention, you may damage your penis and suffer from permanent ED.

Sildenafil and Low Blood Pressure

It is important not to take Sildenafil with any medication that also lowers blood pressure. Unless, of course, you are specifically directed to do so by your doctor. Drugs that fall into this category include nitrates, alpha-blockers, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors and calcium channel blockers.

All these medications lower your blood pressure, and so does Sildenafil. So, mixing these drugs can cause a dangerous drop in your blood pressure. Low blood pressure prevents blood from flowing back to the heart and may result in a heart attack or stroke.

Sildenafil and Illicit Drugs

As mentioned earlier, Nitrates and Sildenafil are dangerous if taken together. This also applies to “Poppers” which contains amyl nitrate, alkyl nitrate, or butyl nitrate. Mixing Sildenafil and Poppers in a party situation is not uncommon, but it is hazardous. As with all nitrates, taking Sildenafil and poppers together lowers your blood pressure. And, can then lead to a heart attack or stroke.

There have been no clinical studies into Sildenafil and illicit drugs other than poppers. But, it does not mean mixing them is safe. Drugs such as cocaine, speed and ecstasy all put increased pressure and stress on your heart. This could prove fatal when combined with Sildenafil and sex.

Marijuana interacts with several drugs, including Sildenafil. Compounds in marijuana prevent other drugs from breaking down. As a result, marijuana smokers who take Sildenafil may have increased levels of Sildenafil in their blood. As levels of Sildenafil build-up, you may experience more intense side effects.

Sildenafil and Antimicrobials

When you take Sildenafil with certain antimicrobials, you also slow the breakdown of the drug in your body. As with marijuana, this can result in a build-up of Sildenafil. Again, this increases your risk of side effects. Certain antibiotics, antifungals and antiviral drugs fall into this category.

As you can see, there is a long list of drugs that interact with Sildenafil. There are so many different drugs, and each one may have several other names. This makes it hard to navigate what is and isn’t safe to use with Sildenafil. When in doubt, consult with your doctor. Your doctor can adjust your dose of Sildenafil or change your prescription.

Before using Sildenafil, consult with your doctor. It will minimise your risk and reduce the chances of unwanted side effects.
