Information about Viagra

Viagra is a medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction. It is a brand name – the active ingredient is called sildenafil.

The starting dose for viagra is one 50mg tablet in a 24 hour period. Adjustment of dose can be done as necessary.

The drug should be taken 30-60 minutes before the planned sexual activity. Duration of use is 4 hours on average. Read the included leaflet for side effects, cautions and interactions with other types of drugs.

The efficiency of the drug can be reduced by large meals, alcohol, grapefruit and fatty foods.

The patent for Viagra expired in 2013. There is a lower cost generic drug available.

Viagra – How Does it Work?

Viagra increases blood flow to the penis, allowing men to sustain an erection for intercourse.

The active ingredient in the drug is sildenafil, which is an inhibitor. The specific inhibitor blocks the natural process which regulates blood flow to the penis. Natural arousal is required, however, for the drug to be effective.

Directions For Use

Taking the drug requires a starting dose of 50mg for one dose, especially in men who are new to the drug. Men over 65 will need to start on a lower dose, however.

The drug works for 4 hours on average and should be taken 30-60 minutes before sexual activity.

The dosage of the drug can be scaled up or down depending on the specific need of the user. There are multiple options available in this regard. Viagra should not be taken more than once in a day.

For the treatment to work, sexual arousal is required. Viagra is generally more likely to work if sexual arousal is expected within an hour of taking the tablet. Without sexual arousal, there will be no benefit.

For best results, large meals, meals high in fat, grapefruit and excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided.

Success Rate

A trial period of 4 different uses of the medication should be undertaken before a final verdict on effectiveness is rendered for each person. This should definitely be the case before requesting a change of medication.

There will be periods of time as the treatment is not suitable for certain situations, and may not improve the underlying causes of erectile dysfunction. It is important to note that satisfactory use of the drug will require an adequate blood supply, healthy nervous system, and sexual arousal.

If erectile dysfunction is the result of operational spinal injury, there may be damage to the nerves that cannot be overcome. Viagra may assist slightly in this particular situation, but other assistance may be required. There will be instances where the cause of erectile dysfunction may require specialist treatment, and situations where it is psychological in nature.
